You may have heard a lot of buzz about the Gmail & Yahoo changes starting this year. One of the biggest is Email Authentication is Now Mandatory! Without it you may end up in the Spam Folder, or worst yet not get delivered at all.
Email Authentication is a way to verify the sender of an email. There’s a lot of nuances to Email Authentication but basically it involves setting up multiple Domain Name Server Records to prove emails from your CRM are being sent on behalf of your business.
These records establish credibility with inbox providers like Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail while protecting your email identity from being stolen by spammers, scammers and spoofers.
Don’t worry if this all sounds technical, we’ve been doing this for years and can walk you through the entire process even if you’ve never written a single line of code.
According to Symantec (one of the world’s leading cybersecurity companies) 85% of all emails sent are malicious or spam. That equates to over 22 billion spam emails daily or a ¼ million spam emails sent every second.
On top of that email volume has doubled since the pandemic as more businesses have developed an online presence.
This increase in both legitimate and malicious emails have overwhelmed the servers of the free email providers like Google, Yahoo & Microsoft.
So much so that in October 2023 Google made the announcement to start closing the loopholes that have been exploited by spammers. Google’s goal is to declutter user’s inbox so they will continue to use email as an essential communication tool.
Here’s what was said in the announcement:
“Many bulk senders don’t appropriately secure and configure their systems, allowing attackers to easily hide in their midst. To help fix that, we’ve focused on a crucial aspect of email security: the validation that a sender is who they claim to be. As basic as it sounds, it’s still sometimes impossible to verify who an email is from given the web of antiquated and inconsistent systems on the internet.”
In other words, email authentication has been around for a while but most people haven’t set it up or set it up correctly because there’s been no consequence for not doing so…
